Volvo Software Updates in Seattle

As cars become electronically and digitally integrated, the need for required software updates is becoming very common. Volvos especially have been adopting more and more programs and functions that require constant updates, just as a smartphone does. There are two main types of software updates for your Volvo, Over The Air (OTA) and those that need to be manually carried out using Volvo factory software (VIDA). OTA update functionality was only introduced between 2021 and 2022, so for any models older, you’ll need to visit a Volvo specialist such as Precision Motorworks to have the software updated.

The Purpose of Volvo Software Updates

Generally speaking, these updates will deliver small bug fixes and feature improvements to the vehicle’s user interface or connected app function, but occasionally software updates can fix vital issues. This is why it is important to make sure that your Volvo’s software is up to date. Conveniently, Volvo offers a free tool to check the latest software improvements offered for your vehicle, which can be accessed here. Some updates deploy useful new features such as GPS map updates, new app control functions, and even new 360° camera functionality in some models.

Software Update Remedies in Practice

Because so many modern vehicle functions are controlled via software, any bugs or issues in the software can present significant problems, whether to in-car services or driveability of the vehicle itself. Oftentimes, Volvo will publish service Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) outlying common issues and will recommend updating to the latest software version as a remedy. A few instances of this can be seen in the following service bulletins, referred to by Volvo as Technical Journals:

  • TJ 36814.2.0, addressing a malfunctioning gear selector via software update
  • TJ 34647.7.0, addressing an erroneous parking brake malfunction message via software update
  • TJ 36929.3.0, fixes a check engine light that occurs after charging the vehicle at temperatures below 68°F via a software update

The Importance of Timely Service

In the case of a Volvo software update correcting a bug or negative symptom, it is necessary to have the update performed in a timely manner. If you are not experiencing any issues as a result of out of date software, then there is no immediacy to have an update performed, however it is important to note that if updates are too far out of date, your vehicle may lose OTA update functionality until manually updated at a repair specialist.

If you are experiencing strange electrical, performance, or comfort system issues, often our first step will be to check for applicable service bulletins matching your issue, and chances are a software update will be part of the recommended fix. Unfortunately performing these manual updates can be quite time intensive. It’s not always as simple and straightforward as updating your phone or computer.

At Precision Motorworks we are equipped with Volvo factory software (VIDA) as well as Volvo’s factory vehicle interface (DiCE). This allows us to have the same capabilities in regards to performing software updates as the dealer, often at a much lower price. Feel free to reach out with any Volvo software related issues, and we’ll be happy to guide you through the repair process!
