VW and Audi Air Filter Replacement in Seattle

Owning an Audi or Volkswagen in Seattle is almost always an enjoyable time, as the Quattro or Alltrack functionality lends itself to great handling on wet pavement, and the quality of the German-built chassis and interior mean comfort even over potholes and bumps. Enthusiasts may modify their Audi or VW with aftermarket wheels or exhausts, and purists may stick to only what the manufacturer designed, but regardless of who you are as an owner, we all need to be mindful of our air filters. At Precision Motorworks, we understand maintaining and regularly replacing engine and cabin air filters is not a glamorous affair, nor is it usually on the top of someone’s mind when it comes to car health, but it nonetheless is critical for anyone serious about upkeep on their European vehicle. They may be small, but engine and cabin air filters play a critical role.

What is the Engine Air Filter?

An engine air filter’s job is to catch dirt, dust, debris, and other unwanted particles as they flow from the front of the vehicle’s grille, through the intake piping, in through the intake manifold, and into the engine for combustion. Your engine needs a precise mixture of air and fuel to run properly, and that air needs to be as clean as possible. As it cleans the air, the air filter itself accumulates dust and debris, and new air passing through can be blocked, restricting airflow into the engine. As such, replacement every 15k – 20k miles is strongly recommended.

What is the Cabin Air Filter?

The cabin air filter handles a different kind of job. Instead of protecting the engine, it protects the air the driver and passengers breathe inside the vehicle. As outside air enters the HVAC system, the cabin air filter (or filters) trap dust, pollen, smoke, pollution, and other airborne particles before they blow through the vents. Because of this, nearly all new, high-quality cabin filters are charcoal activated to maximize cleaning ability. This is especially important in a city environment like Seattle’s where vehicles are often exposed to road dust, exhaust, and seasonal allergens.

The Consequences of Dirty Air Filters

A clogged engine air filter can lead to reduced performance, sluggish acceleration, and lower fuel efficiency. In some cases, it can even contribute to rough running or trigger fault codes related to airflow readings. On turbocharged Audi and VW engines especially, proper airflow is a big part of keeping the vehicle responsive and efficient. A clogged air filter can cause the turbocharger to overwork itself and cause damage throughout the engine. When Audis or VWs with the 2.0L Turbo engine are due for regular servicing, it is recommended to replace the engine air filter, oil separator, and spark plugs all in one fell swoop.

When the cabin air filter becomes dirty or clogged, you may notice weaker airflow from the vents, unpleasant odors, or a musty smell when the climate system is running. In some cases, a neglected cabin filter can make the interior air feel stale and allow more dust and irritants to circulate through the cabin. For drivers who deal with allergies or spend a lot of time commuting, a clean cabin air filter can make a noticeable difference in comfort. If you’ve lived in the Pacific Northwest for any number of years, you’ve undoubtedly encountered smokey summers from wildfires, and your vehicle breathes that smoke in as it drives. Cabin air filters can get contaminated quickly by this smoke, and as such, during smokey summers it is important to replace all air filters (inside your car and home alike) often.
